Three Aurora police officers and two paramedics will face criminal charges, including manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide, in connection with Elijah McClain’s death two years ago, Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser announced Wednesday.

Aurora police officers Nathan Woodyard and Randy Roedema, former officer Jason Rosenblatt and paramedics Jeremy Cooper and Lt. Peter Cichuniec were indicted on 32 counts, according to an indictment made public Wednesday.

The indictment comes a year after Gov. Jared Polis appointed Weiser as a special prosecutor in the case, a rare move prompted by massive protests for racial justice after the killing of George Floyd, an unarmed Black man, by Minneapolis police.

McClain’s case garnered little attention outside of Colorado two years ago after he died following an injection of ketamine and a struggle with Aurora police officers, but after Floyd’s death, his name turned into a rallying cry for protesters across the nation seeking police reform.
