California powered to a huge gain of 140,400 jobs during July, officials reported Friday, but the pace of the state’s rebound fell far below the gains posted during June, showing the effects of renewed business shutdowns by government agencies to combat the coronavirus.
The gains statewide in July were far fewer than the mammoth increase of 542,200 jobs added in California during June, the government reported.
California’s unemployment rate improved to 13.3 percent in July, down from 14.9 percent in June, a significant increase but far above the record-low unemployment rate of 3.9 percent that was set in January and February of this year.
Santa Clara County added 4,400 jobs during July, the San Francisco-San Mateo region gained 8,600 positions, and the East Bay added 1,600 jobs, according to a federal database. All the numbers were adjusted for seasonal variations.
