A day after Alameda County became the fifth Bay Area county to report a death caused by COVID-19, officials announced a second person has died from the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.
The details of the patient’s age and whether he or she had any underlying health conditions were not immediately available.
Health officials added to the number of confirmed positive tests on Tuesday afternoon, as 135 people have now tested positive for COVID-19 in Alameda County, including 11 cases from the city of Berkeley, which operates an independent health department.
The latest data shows 13 people across the county, including one in Berkeley, tested positive since totals were updated on Monday.
The city of Berkeley says its total only includes lab-confirmed cases and does not accurately reflect the number of people infected with COVID-19, “which we know is much larger.”
The total number of coronavirus cases in the Bay Area has topped 1,000 as Santa Clara County confirmed three new deaths and an additional 54 positive tests on Tuesday. San Francisco reported 21 new cases on Tuesday while San Mateo County confirmed 19 positive tests.
More than 2,000 people in the state of California have now tested positive for COVID-19.
