The United States on Tuesday surpassed 400,000 deaths from COVID-19 — amid the slow-moving national vaccine rollout.

That figure amounts to nearly 20 percent of the world’s total death count from the virus, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

COVID-19 has so far claimed the lives of more than 2,032,500 people globally since the outbreak first emerged in China in late 2019.

The US has the 10th-highest number of total COVID-19 deaths per capita — or a rate of about 1,205 fatalities per 1 million people, according to Statista.

Recently, COVID-19 deaths in the US have been surging. Earlier this month, the country recorded a single-day high of nearly 3,900 fatalities.

The coronavirus has infected over 23.9 million people in the US, data from Johns Hopkins shows — as new strains of the virus emerge in the country.
