In the 18 years covering 2002 through 2019, 8,110 people were murdered in New York City. In the four weeks since the city’s first coronavirus death, the virus killed 5,429 people. (And even that grim tally, as of Friday afternoon, misses New Yorkers dying at home without being tested for the virus, though the city says it will start accounting for them soon.)
