SACRAMENTO — The man fatally shot in a road rage incident on a Sacramento highway was a grandfather, a U.S. Army veteran and a retired correctional officer, his daughter said.
Lufino Reyes Mejorado, 60, was shot multiple times Monday on Interstate 5 in a road rage incident that began on another freeway, the California Highway Patrol said.
David Perry, 33, of Sacramento, was arrested in the killing and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail. It was not immediately known if he has an attorney who can speak on his behalf.
Officers said the events started unfolding at about 2:15 p.m. Monday on Interstate 80. Both vehicles drove west before getting on southbound I-5, the highway patrol said.
Perry pulled up his Mercedes sedan next to Mejorado’s pickup truck and opened fire, the highway patrol said.
Mejorado, also of Sacramento, was taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries.
“We feel robbed that he was taken from us,” Mejorado’s daughter, Lauren Bohanna told KCRA-TV. “It was just a senseless, selfish act of violence.”
Mejorado started his career as a correctional officer in 1988 and worked at California State Prison, Solano until his retirement in 2018, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
“He dedicated his life to serving others,” Bohanna said, adding that he was a grandfather and a U.S. Army veteran.
Bohanna said she wants her father to be remembered as a loving and kind person and for the community to learn from what happened.
“Be the bigger person,” Bohanna said. “Don’t give in to your emotions.”
Perry is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday, Sacramento County jail records said.
