Denver will stop requiring masks in K-12 schools and other childcare facilities by the end of the month as coronavirus infections continue to decline in the metro area, announced the city on Wednesday.
“With the current decline in severe cases and the high rates of immunity that we’re seeing, it is safe to lift the school mask mandate at this time,” said Dr. Sterling McLaren, Denver’s chief medical officer, in a statement. “The best way to protect children is to make sure they stay up to date with their vaccinations and ensure that the adults around them are vaccinated as well.”
Denver Public Schools have required students and staff to wear face coverings in school buildings since August.
The city will lift its mask mandate for schools and childcare facilities at 11:59 p.m. on Feb. 25, according to the news release.
The coverings are still recommended by public health officials in indoor spaces — especially for those who are unvaccinated or immunocompromised.
