As states work to reopen their economies from coronavirus lockdowns, more than half are seeing surges in new daily infections.
The outbreak is accelerating in the U.S. and other countries, said Dr. Michael Ryan, the emergencies chief at the World Health Organization. But on Monday he dismissed the notion that record-breaking daily cases is due to more testing.
Meanwhile, the nation’s top infectious disease expert returns to Capitol Hill on Tuesday to testify before a House committee about the Trump administration’s coronavirus response. Dr. Anthony Fauci was last on Capitol Hill in May, when he warned senators that reopening efforts by states needed to be done cautiously because it presents a “real risk that you will trigger an outbreak.”

Trump on slowing down testing: In a letter to the Health and Human Services Department watchdog, Senate Democrats said they’re seeking an investigation into President Donald Trump’s claim he asked “his people” to slow down testing for the coronavirus.
