Without the derogatory quotation marks, Wuhan is a vast and ambitious city, a combination of sophistication and superstition, luxury and penury, celebration and grief. Wuhan’s scientific learning, like its university, rivals the best the U.S. has to offer, even as its wet markets take the Western visitor back to a distant time where exotic animals dominate the senses. I roamed the streets of Wuhan relishing these contrasts, while somewhat resenting signposts of similarity such as the all-too-frequent KFCs.
