CUNY is the public university of the nation’s COVID-19 epicenter, and as such educates the hardest-hit populations: black, brown, poor and immigrant New Yorkers who are more vulnerable to health complications and who make up a large percentage of the essential workforce. The students in this class come from all five boroughs, as well as Long Island and Yonkers, and they and their families work in essential retail stores, in health care, at shipping warehouses and on the police force. They are the still-beating heart of metro New York City, the people who make the region run every day — crisis or not.
