Vaccine Mandates Spark Protests at American, Southwest

Workers at several airlines—including American Airlines (AA) and Southwest Airlines (SWA)—have started protesting the airlines’ vaccination mandates for their workers. Both airlines have told workers that they must be vaccinated by November 24.

Hundreds of AA workers and allies protested outside the company’s Fort Worth, Texas headquarters on Thursday. They opposed the company’s requirement for all workers to be vaccinated or fired.

The Southwest Airlines Pilots Association (SWAPA), a union, has filed a lawsuit against SWA over its vaccine mandate, The Dallas Morning News reported.

Both companies have put mandates into place to comply with the federal requirements put in place by Democratic President Joe Biden. Biden said that all federal contractors would need to vaccinate their employees. Both airlines have contracts with the federal government.
