Two Los Angeles County Sheriffs officers were clinging to life after they were ambushed and shot point-blank through their patrol car window late Saturday.

A lone gunman walked up to the parked patrol car in the southern LA County city of Compton and opened fire, strafing one male and one female deputy with bullets, Sheriffs officials tweeted at 11 p.m. local time.

The suspect, shown in surveillance video wearing black clothing and a black cap, then took off running.

He was still being sought before dawn on Sunday.

“They are both still fighting for their lives,” the tweet said of the assassination-attempt victims, “so please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.”

Both officers “sustained multiple gunshot wounds and are in critical condition,” the officials tweeted.
