The cause of MIS-C is unknown, but the syndrome is thought to be an excessive immune response following a known COVID-19 infection or likely exposure. Patients often have a high fever, and their organs — including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes and gastrointestinal system — can become inflamed and fail. Symptoms can include fever, rashes, rapid breathing, fatigue, red eyes, fast heartbeat as well as redness in hands, feet, lips or tongue.
