The issues for drinking holes and eateries are not limited to slowing the spread of the virus. Despite Congress setting up a $350 billion program to aid small businesses (through the Small Business Administration) during the crisis, the Paycheck Protection Program was quickly gobbled up, including by the politically connected and powerful. Shake Shack, Ruth’s Chris, Papa John’s and major hotels somehow all gained access to funding despite being anything but small. Indeed, we rolled our eyes this week when Shake Shack CEO Danny Meyer (upon returning its $10 million loan) said the restaurant industry “rises and falls together.”
