When Popover King first opened in March 2019 in the West End, just a block and a half from TD Garden, it promised to put classic New England food front and center. Owner Coco Cabuquit-Love’s menu focused on popovers, Boston brown bread, buttermilk egg bread, and various takes on the rum tum ditty, a Depression-era dish that served as a savory, cheesy entrée.
But after operating for just over a year, Cabuquit-Love told Boston.com that Popover King has closed for good.
“We couldn’t move forward without the cooperation of our landlord,” she shared in an e-mail. “We needed a little bit more time to pivot into a more online/takeout operation in navigating this new reality for our industry. He just wasn’t willing to negotiate, and not necessarily in terms of amount, but in terms of delays and allowances for such.”
Popover King was located at 74 Canal St., on a stretch near North Station that has seen diminished foot traffic as fewer people commute to work downtown and as sporting events are held without fans.
But despite the closure, Cabuquit-Love said she hopes to bring it back someday. The owner previously told Boston.com that she feel like it’s “something new in the area. I don’t think there’s a restaurant [here] that just screams New England.”
