Civil rights attorney Antonio Romanucci, who is on the legal team representing Floyd’s family, described qualified immunity as a “get-out-of-court free card” whose elimination would be the “most consequential” measure in the police reform bill. The doctrine, he said, allows cops accused of misconduct “to utter a few words, say they were afraid for their lives and that’s it.” Ending it at the federal level would help reduce police killings because cops would understand that they could be held accountable for their actions, he told The News.
