A member of the Oakland Police Department became the first known city of Oakland employee who tested positive for COVID-19, officials confirmed Friday.

“The employee is currently offsite, self-quarantined, and recovering. The employee has not been to work since March 15, 2020,” the city said in a statement. “The Department has taken immediate action and precautions to protect the health and safety of all of our employees.”

As of Friday, Alameda County health officials confirmed 10 more positive tests for coronavirus, bringing the county’s total to 45 positive tests. The figure does not include Berkeley, which has its own city health department.

Earlier this week, a Santa Clara police officer was put in self-isolation after contracting the deadly disease. At least 10 members of the San Jose Fire Department and a reserve officer with San Jose police have also tested positive for COVID-19.

A police spokeswoman said the city of Oakland received COVID-19 testing, which will be available for first responders beginning Friday.
