Chief U.S. District Judge Algenon Marbley granted the preliminary injunction on Friday, nearly a year after 46-year-old Floyd died during a confrontation with former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who was recently convicted of murder in the case. Video of the incident, which captures Chauvin kneeling down on Floyd’s neck while others officers watched, sparked demonstrations nationwide, including in the city of Columbus, Ohio.
