The number of patients and staff who tested positive for COVID-19 at an Orinda skilled nursing facility has surged to almost 50, according to health officials.

At the Orinda Care Center, 49 people — 27 residents and 22 staff members — have tested positive for COVID-19. Four residents have been hospitalized while the rest remain at the facility, according to officials at Contra Costa Health Services.

That comes after the health department confirmed 27 cases on Friday — 24 residents and 3 staff members. Since then, the number of staff members who tested positive have soared, according to the new data from the health department. One person at the facility who had tested positive for COVID-19 and was in hospice care died over the weekend, according to a health department spokesman.

Meanwhile, at Canyon Springs Acute Care in San Jose, a jump of nine positive cases brought the number of patients and staff at a nursing home who have tested positive for COVID-19 there has risen to 20, with another 16 people awaiting test results.

A total of 16 people — eight staff and eight patients — who showed symptoms have tested negative, the spokesman said. There have been no deaths at the facility from the coronavirus.
