Coronavirus letter: Newsom may cut program vital to me, my husband

Coronavirus letter: Newsom may cut program vital to me, my
husband 1

Re: “Walters: Coronavirus-fueled recession freezes Newsom’s ambitious proposed agenda” (Eastbaytimes.com, Opinion section, May 31):

My husband and I are among those who would be “adversely affected” by the governor’s proposed budget cuts.

My husband is living with dementia and had been attending Choice in Aging, a wonderful Adult Day Health Care (ADHC) program in Pleasant Hill, until it closed due to the pandemic. They offer therapeutic group activities and music led by an enthusiastic, professional and caring staff.

This was such a comfort to my husband and me both. A five-hour respite can be the chance to breathe and regroup for a caregiver, since our days are long, challenging and often overwhelming.

Now the governor has proposed scaling back or ending Medi-Cal coverage for ADHC, and I’m afraid this will also eliminate it for private-pay patients like us because these centers can’t survive without Medi-Cal.

Sen. Steve Glazer and Assemblywoman Rebecca Bauer-Kahan, please preserve state funding for Adult Day Health Care.
