A condemned inmate at San Quentin State Prison has become the fourth prisoner on the state’s death row to die since Friday from complications of COVID-19, authorities said.
David Reed, 60, died Tuesday at an outside hospital, according to a statement from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
Condemned San Quentin inmate David Reed, 60, died from Tuesday from complications of the coronavirus, authorities said.
His death follows that of Dewayne Michael Carey, 59; Scott Thomas Erskine, 57; and Manuel Machado Alvarez, 59, last week.
The deaths come amid a coronavirus outbreak at the prison that has seen more than 1,500 cases and at least six deaths through Monday.
Reed was convicted in Riverside County of first-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon. He also was convicted of second-degree robbery. He had been on death row since Oct. 31, 2011.
There have been 25 deaths in California prisons from COVID-19, and Gov. Gavin Newsom said last week that the prison outbreak is a “deep area of focus on concern.”
Reed’s death leaves 720 people on California’s death row.
