LOS GATOS — Dozens of people gathered peacefully Sunday morning to support the Black Lives Matter movement, with police standing by as counterdemonstrators argued with some people.
The rally was meant to draw attention in a small community not typically known for protests; residents were flocking to a nearby farmers market as the protest got underway about 11 a.m. near Los Gatos Town Plaza.
About 200 people attended the rally, the latest in a series of protests sparked by the death of George Floyd at the hands of police in Minnesota. Bay Area protests over police violence have gone on for weeks since Floyd’s death on May 25.
As supporters held up signs with the Black Lives Matter message, a smaller group gathered nearby, some holding U.S. flags or flags making reference to the “thin blue line” of police.
There were some arguments as the groups came closer to each other, but no immediate reports of arrests or injuries.

I spoke with Black Guerilla Coalition member Booley Smith who is confronting a counterprotester now. It’s been quite tense here so far but so far no physical confrontation. Via @mercnews pic.twitter.com/l6jS64NF6S

Things are very tense with the counter protesters. A contingent of #BLM protesters have already started marching around town but some are staying to confront them. Via @mercnews pic.twitter.com/K295QdAe32
