A 14-year-old old boy has been detained for allegedly shooting a Los Angeles Police Officer who was driving to work on Friday morning, according to officials.
A plain-clothes officer was driving his civilian vehicle to Newton Community Police Station at around 5 a.m. in the Historic South Central District of LA Friday morning when his window suddenly exploded, cops said.
“As he crossed the intersection he realizes or hears the glass of his vehicle has shattered. Then he felt a sharp pain in the back of his head,” Assistant Chief Robert Marino said at a news conference Friday afternoon.
Marino said the officer, an unidentified 20-year veteran, continued driving to the police station, just blocks away from where he was shot, and ran across the street to the Los Angeles Fire Department station.
Once there, LAFD officers treated him with aid and stabilized him before transferring him to USC Medical Center where he is recovering with his family, he said.
“I’m happy to report that he is in stable condition. He is not seriously injured and he will be fine,” Marino said.
Officers responding to the shooting discovered a juvenile male in the immediate area with a handgun. He is being processed by the department’s robbery and homicide division. Cops are continuing to canvass the area for witnesses and footage.
The assistant chief said there is “No indication that he has been targeted at this point.”
He said it was unclear if there were any other suspects involved.
“Grateful our officer will survive this unprovoked attack,” LAPD Chief Michael Moore Tweeted on Friday. “Just spoke with him by phone. Our robbery homicide detectives have an investigation and I’m confident they will identify the individual(s) responsible. Too many guns in too many hands.
