Last fall, the mayor and the City Council agreed to shrink the jail population to around 3,300 people in order to close Rikers Island and jail all people in the boroughs. Formerly incarcerated persons led this historic campaign, their unshackled voices articulating the horror we had ignored for so long. Today there are more than 5,300 persons in the jails. The city must speed up its timeline to decrease the jail population. This will reduce exposure to the coronavirus inside jails for the health and safety of people in custody, security and civilian staff, and the communities they return to each day.
