The Washington Monument will close in a bid to help stem the tide of the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Parks Service said.
The 555-foot marble obelisk tower, the construction of which was completed in 1884, was shuttered on Jan. 11 for security reasons due to the inauguration.
The monument will reopen when the NPS “deems it is safe to do so,” depending on public health conditions in Washington, D.C.
The decision to shutter the monument means that now all indoor attractions that are part of the National Mall and Memorial Parks are closed due to COVID-19, the NPS said. Outdoor monuments are unaffected.
