SAN JOSE — The opening of a new Topgolf San Jose is edging closer, an event that could bring the South Bay a big entertainment, sports, and dining complex.
The north San Jose facility, which is currently hiring workers ahead of its upcoming opening, could offer a welcome economic counterpoint to a dreary year of coronavirus-linked business shutdowns.
Topgolf’s official Instagram account states that the north San Jose venue is slated to open sometime in April, according to the company’s posts and its replies to questions on its social media platform.
“San Jose update: OPENING SOON,” Topgolf stated in a post around March 21 on its Instagram.
In posts in late March, Topgolf was asked whether it was really going to be open in San Jose during April.
“Yep, we are making the official opening date announcement soon,” Topgolf stated in one reply on its Instagram account. In another late March reply that stated April is the month targeted for opening, Topgolf said, “Next month! Don’t have an exact date yet.”
Topgolf operates high-tech driving ranges that allow people to hit golf balls equipped with microchips that record distance and accuracy. The venues typically also include dining and drinking establishments.
“Top Golf’s opening provides another hopeful sign that San Jose is poised to make a strong rebound as we emerge from this pandemic,” San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said.
In north San Jose’s Alviso district, the Topgolf complex features a large curving structure along with a huge golf driving range, a direct observation of the site by this news organization shows. The structure appears to have three levels. A lengthy driving range and circular targets for golf shots are also visible.
The late March, a Top Golf Instagram post featured a video of the venue that also provided a brief description of what the complex would feature.
Among the amenities touted in the Instagram video: A wine bar, game-watching bar, outdoor patio, conference rooms, and 120 bays from which people could hit golf shots.
However, the Instagram video showed a sign that clearly said, “We are still under construction.” But the sign also stated, “stay tuned for our announcement of our opening date.”
Topgolf didn’t respond to requests from this news organization for a comment about the situation.
Management, administrative, sales, server, bartender, busser, food and drink runners, guest services, kitchen, and maintenance were among the jobs listed as being available through a “now hiring” effort for the San Jose venue, according to the careers section on the Topgolf website.
Construction on the north San Jose site had been delayed for a period of time due to the coronavirus.
“I am heartened to see hiring and new jobs in a moment as difficult as this,” Mayor Liccardo said.
