The only other Big Scare I encountered in my lifetime was on 9/11, and then for some years afterward. I was in Manhattan, about four miles from Ground Zero, when the World Trade Center towers crumbled into ash, taking 3,000 innocent, unsuspecting lives then and many others since. More terrorist attacks followed for years to come. Any second, we soon realized, a bomb could blow any one of us to smithereens.
