Brown Sugar Kitchen chef-founder Tanya Holland has opened her long-anticipated new cafe inside the Oakland Museum of California.

Town Fare, a veggie-centric California soul food eatery, is in its soft opening, with a small menu of housemade beverages, salads and light bites available a la carte or as picnic boxes to be enjoyed outside the museum in the new garden setting.

A look at the current menu reveals Hibiscus Lemonade and Peached Iced Tea, Spicy Cabbage Slaw, Dirty Potato Salad, Mixed Cucumber Salad, and Ricotta Toast with blistered cherry tomatoes, red onions and herbs.

The Mercury News reported in February 2020 that Holland had been tapped to open the eatery, which was slated to open six months later. The pandemic derailed those plans and allowed time for Holland to focus on other projects, like her podcast, Tanya’s Table. This past May, Holland filed a Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization plan in order to restructure and expand her business.

According to the museum, the fast-casual cafe with its communal dining vibe will officially open for indoor service later this summer. Check back for updates.

The Oakland Museum of California is located at 1000 Oak St. in Oakland’s Lake Merritt neighborhood.
