At SIU Carbondale, freshmen and new student enrollment jumped significantly, though overall enrollment fell by 2.8% from fall 2019 to 11,366. Still, the drop was much less than in any of the previous far years, where declines between 8% and 12% have been reported, and leaders are optimistic the school is turning the corner. The number of new students enrolling increased by about 31%. Most are freshmen, though some come in with enough credit to begin as sophomores or juniors, spokeswoman Rae Goldsmith said.
