A 37-year-old Saugus correctional officer died due to complications from COVID-19, and his family hopes their loss will help encourage others to get vaccinated, Essex County Sheriff Kevin F. Coppinger said.

Anthony J. Pasquarello, a 15-year veteran of the department, died Thursday. Pasquarello leaves behind his 6-year-old son Vincent and his fiancée, Rio Joyce Mendoza.

Dozens gathered for a candlelight vigil late Friday afternoon outside the Middleton correctional facility, where Pasquarello was remembered for his dedication to work and his family. A radio call announced Pasquarello’s “end of watch” on Dec. 9, 2021, according to video of the vigil.
