APTOS — The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office is reporting its deputies’ involvement in a nonfatal officer-involved shooting Tuesday night.

According to a release issued by the office Thursday, deputies were in the midst of contacting two occupants in a vehicle just after 10:50 p.m. on the 7900 block of Soquel Drive when they observed the driver to be armed with a gun. That section of road stretches from about the Rancho Del Mar Shopping Center to the Aptos Village Square.

The driver reportedly fired “at least one round” while deputies attempted to detain the driver. A deputy discharged a weapon several times, striking the driver. Deputies rendered the man medical aid and he later was transported to a hospital. The Sheriff’s Office said the man is expected to survive.

The involved deputies and car’s passenger reportedly were not injured during the incident.
