SAN JOSE — An officer shot at a suspect’s car while responding to a burglary call at an Infiniti dealership in East San Jose, but no one was hit and two people were later detained, according to police.
Neither officers nor suspects in the early Monday encounter were reported injured in what marked the city’s fifth police shooting of the year. One of those shootings was fatal.
San Jose police were called just after 4 a.m. to Infiniti of San Jose, at Capitol Expressway and Tully Road, for a report of a burglary in progress, according to a police news release.
Police said one officer arrived at the scene and had gotten out on foot when the suspects fled in a car that was “driving directly” at him. That prompted the officer to open fire.
Two people were taken into custody at the scene, police said.
The officer who fired his gun was placed on paid administrative leave and a shooting investigation was launched by the SJPD homicide unit, which will be monitored by the department’s internal affairs unit, city attorney’s office and the independent police auditor, all of which are routine following an officer shooting.
Traffic on Capitol Expressway at Tully Road, one of the city’s busiest thoroughfares, was diverted for about three hours while authorities examined the crime scene.
Additional details about the case were not released Monday afternoon. Messages left with the Infiniti dealership were not immediately returned.
