Calls by doctors, epidemiologists and corrections unions to release elderly and vulnerable inmates from jails and prisons before they become epicenters of COVID-19 outbreaks have been met with mixed results. While some officials are thinning their prison populations, others echo Bristol County, Mass., Sheriff Tom Hodgson, who vehemently holds fast to the principle that inmates shouldn’t be set free, under the belief that serving their full sentences is what will keep communities safe.
