Manhattan: Re: “As coronavirus spreads among NYC Board of Elections staff, calls grow to remove barrier to novice candidates” (April 13): As the world has grappled with the pandemic over the past month, we’ve seen people adapt their lives in remarkable ways to keep themselves and their communities safe. Technology has allowed work meetings, social gatherings and services for Passover and Easter to occur. Even New York State’s court system has managed to operate remotely. Qualifying for the ballot shouldn’t be a matter of life or death. The fact that candidate petitions must be challenged in-person puts the lives of campaign workers and Board of Elections staffers, as well as public health, at risk. It’s unnecessary and wrong.
