Protesters to march over fatal CHP shooting in East
Oakland 1

Protesters angered over a fatal shooting by California Highway Patrol officers that killed a 23-year-old man in East Oakland on Saturday night will march today near the spot where he died.

A group calling itself the Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action Integration and Immigrant Rights Fight for Equality By Any Means Necessary (BAMN) are demanding the names and jailing of the CHP officers involved in the shooting that left Eric Salgado dead in a residential neighborhood near Elmhurst Middle School.

The shooting also wounded a female passenger who was pregnant, according to the organization. She hasn’t been identified.

The march will happen at 1 p.m. in front of Elmhurst Middle School in the 1800 block of 98th Avenue.

The shooting occurred at about 10:45 p.m. in the 9600 block of Cherry Street, within sight of the school.

Salgado died at the scene. The woman was hospitalized in stable condition.

The shooting has outraged the community.

“We demand the names of the officers involved, their personnel files, and a one-way ticket to prison for each of them,” BAMN organizer Hoku Jeffrey said in a statement, adding the organization believes the CHP, Oakland Police Department and Alameda County District Attorney’s Office have covered up the actual incident and are working to protect the officers.

Oakland police are leading the investigation and said the CHP officers were conducting a criminal investigation when the shooting happened. Authorities had not released any other details about the shooting, including how many CHP officers fired and what prompted officers to shoot.

The fatal shooting comes as protests have dotted all regions of the United States in the aftermath of the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, an incident that was caught on video.

No video of the CHP shooting has emerged.
