Memorial Day weekend is a time to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the country.
It’s a holiday marked by solemn remembrances and gestures of thanks. One of the most common traditions is the placing of U.S. flags on the graves of fallen soldiers. That has presented a problem as some places suspended that tradition because of coronavirus concerns. Nevertheless, volunteers stepped up and placed the flags on graves themselves. That’s seen at cemeteries in Oakland; Wading River, New York; and Tuscon, Arizona.
In Arlington National Cemetery, soldiers from the 3rd Infantry Regiment, or the “Old Guard,” did their duty and placed flags on the graves there.
Although other traditions such as parades have been put on hold, that hasn’t stopped others from marking the holiday in their own way.
