The Patriots’ future at quarterback remains unsettled.

Cam Newton wasn’t the answer. Bill Belichick doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to look at Jarrett Stidham. New England isn’t going to get a high enough draft pick to land a top prospect.

A year removed from Tom Brady, and the Patriots don’t seem any closer to finding a replacement for the future Hall of Famer.

Newton was pulled late in Monday night’s ugly 38-9 home loss to the Bills, but that was more the result of the lopsided score, not his own performance, Belichick said. The Patriots’ coach hasn’t decided who will start Sunday’s meaningless finale against the Jets.

“Everybody in the game of football wants to be playing every single week,” Stidham told reporters after the loss to the Bills. “So yeah, I would absolutely love to have that opportunity, but again, that’s not in my control. I’m not going to focus on it. That’s not going to change the way I prepare. I prepare like I’m the starter, even going back to last year.”

There was hope Newton would flourish under Belichick after inking a one-year deal, but he has struggled, throwing five touchdown passes and 10 interceptions in 14 games.
