sideline mask violation 1

The NFL has come down hard on coaches who fail to wear their face masks properly during this coronavirus-altered season.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has been hit with a $100,000 fine for his lack of face covering on the sideline of MetLife Stadium Sunday as the Niners beat the Jets. The San Francisco 49ers’ organization also faces a $250,000 fine.

The fines come one week after the league reportedly sent a strongly worded memo to teams threatening action if coaches continued to miss the mark on protective face masks beyond Week 1.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the news first on Monday night.

Shanahan was seen with a gaiter mask, but he left it around his neck for much of the game, as he did during the 49ers’ opening loss to the Arizona Cardinals at Levi’s Stadium.

The NFL also levied equivalent fines against Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll and Denver Broncos coach Vic Fangio, as well as their organizations.

Raiders head coach Jon Gruden could also be in for a fine of his own — he’s been seen repeatedly during Monday Night Football without a mask covering his mouth or nose, as has Saints head coach Sean Payton.

The fines tallied against the Niners, Seahawks and Broncos, as well as their coaches, total more than $1 million.
