Class C championship 1

Mattituck already had won a championship in the spring because the pandemic altered the season’s schedule. Wednesday night they stepped on the court with a chance at the unusual feat of winning two county championships in the same calendar year.

Mattituck defeated Port Jefferson, 25-22, 25-22, 25-21, at Hauppauge High School to become the Suffolk Class C champion for the second consecutive season. The Tuckers finished the season with a record of 14-2. This is the program’s tenth county championship.

“It’s tough to get it once and to be able to come back in a shorter period of time between the two seasons . . . I owe a lot to girls, they stuck with it,” head coach Frank Massa said..

Mattituck won the first two sets each by a score of 25-22. In the third set the Tuckers found themselves down 16-4, in large part because of numerous unforced errors. They stormed back by scoring 17 of the next 21 points to take a 21-20 lead and ultimately pulled out the win to secure the championship.

“We have the saying: ‘brush it off.’ Just brush the negative energy off your shoulders and that’s what was going through our minds” Sage Foster said.
