Follow along Friday night when we provide live in-game analysis from the A’s season opener against the Angels at the Coliseum as new-look baseball begins in Oakland.
As per COVID-19 protocols, unless something drastically changes, there will be no fans at games in Oakland. Instead, fans watching on television will see cardboard cutouts of A’s fans. And, if they listen closely enough, they’ll hear Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks’ voice hawking concessions as he turns back the clock to the time when he was a vendor at the Coliseum.
Oakland sends right-hander Frankie Montas to the mound for his first Opening Day start. The Angels will counter with left-hander Andrew Heaney.
Both teams had to like Thursday’s announcement that MLB is expanding its playoffs to allow 16 teams instead of 10 into the 2020 postseason. The top two teams in each division will automatically make the playoffs and both the A’s and Angels figure to be fighting with the Astros for those spots. In addition, two wild card teams from each league will still advance to the playoffs.
