To staunch the spread of infection and protect the medically vulnerable, Mayor de Blasio smartly developed a supervised release program for people who were sentenced to city jail time. Based on this initiative and other actions, more than 1,400 fewer people are in Rikers compared to mid-March — amounting to a 25% reduction of the pre-COVID jail population. In cities across the country, from Los Angeles to Shreveport, authorities have started to take similar steps.
