The Rev. Jesse Jackson and his wife Jacqueline were “responding positively to treatments” for COVID-19 in a Chicago hospital on Sunday, their son said.
The couple were admitted to Northwestern Memorial Hospital a day earlier after contracting the virus.
“Both are resting comfortably and are responding positively to their treatments,” Jonathan Jackson, one of the couple’s five children, said in a statement to the Associated Press.
“My family appreciates all of the expressions of concern and prayers that have been offered on their behalf, and we will continue to offer our prayers for your family as well,” the son said.
The 79-year-old civil rights leader, who suffers from Parkinson’s disease, was vaccinated for the coronavirus in January. A month later he underwent gallbladder surgery.
The vaccination status of his 77-year-old wife was not clear. Relatives told the AP that she has an underlying health condition that led to some concerns in the days leading up to their hospital admission.
