In Illinois, more than 1,500 cases of COVID-19 variants of concern have been detected, according to Illinois Department of Public Health statistics. Of these, 1,141 were the B.1.1.7 strain. The number of reported cases of this particular variant has skyrocketed locally in a short period of time, from only 218 cases statewide as of April 1.
