An FDNY auto mechanic died from coronavirus on Sunday — the department’s first known employee to succumb to the illness.
James Villecco, of Staten Island, worked in the FDNY’s Bureau of Fleet Services since 2014. He was 55 years old.
“Behind the thousands of calls our members respond to every day is a team of dedicated and skilled mechanics who ensure our ambulances are running 24/7,” FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said in a statement.
“James Villecco was one of those truly unsung heroes in our Department whose outstanding work provided medical care for the people of our city. The entire Department mourns his loss.”
Villecco worked at repair shops in Coney Island and Queens during his tenure.
He leaves behind his wife, Joy, and daughter, Jessica.
