A former college basketball standout from New York City died because of complications from coronavirus, according to a report.
David Edwards, who played for Texas A&M and Georgetown, was among the at least 600 infected patients who have died in the US, the Dallas Morning News reported.
Former Texas A&M assistant coach, Frank Haith, who is now the head coach at Tulsa, tweeted Tuesday that Edwards died in his native New York following complications with the virus.
“This situation is very real and impacts so many that we love,” Haith wrote. “Continue to do your part as we fight this awful pandemic. We will beat this, but we need everyone’s help.”
Edwards started his college basketball career at Georgetown before transferring in 1991 to Texas A&M, where he made the All-Southwest Conference team three times.
His Texas A&M teammate Charles Henderson broke the news of his death Monday, saying that “coronavirus has hit me in the heart.”
“Never in a million years would I have even imagined my backcourt teammate would go before his time,” Henderson wrote on Facebook. “I just got the news that Dave Edwards passed away. For those that have been praying for him, he is now in a better place.”
