I am a lawyer on the front lines of the COVID-19 epidemic. I defend people in NYC who cannot afford an attorney in their criminal cases. While I am used to feeling dispensable and dismissed, it has never felt more callous than during this epidemic. While my employer is listening and trying to implement the suggestions of the WHO and the CDC, the court system itself, in opposition to its chief executive, Gov. Cuomo, refuses to bend to the public health mandates. The courts must be kept open for emergency matters, among them, the first appearance in a criminal case, the arraignment.
