Two more people have died in San Francisco from COVID-19 or complications from it, and the city closed in on 1,500 positive cases Thursday, health officials said.

San Mateo County also saw a sharp increase in the number of confirmed coronavirus cases for the second straight day.

Health officials in those two counties released their latest information around 9 a.m. Thursday.

The two additional deaths in San Francisco bring the city’s total to 25 matching the number in Contra Costa County. Santa Clara (107 deaths through Tuesday night), Alameda (57) and San Mateo (48) counties all have recorded more in the Bay Area.

San Francisco is also only one confirmed case shy of reaching 1,500 during the pandemic. But the total (1,499) grew by only nine in the latest figures, the second time in eight days health officials recorded fewer than 10 in a day. It was only the third time since March 21 that the figure has not by risen by double-digits.

The story was different in San Mateo County, where health officials added 29 more positive cases to the ledger. With 1,177 positive cases since the pandemic started, San Mateo County trails Santa Clara County (2,134 through Tuesday night), Alameda (1,568)  and San Francisco in the Bay Area.
