The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in San Francisco continues to rise, but not exponentially.
Health officials on Tuesday reported an additional 23 cases in the city and county, bringing its total number to 397. Dr. Grant Colfax, the director of public health, said 58 patients had been hospitalized as of Monday.
Also on Monday, local officials confirmed their worst fears: the deadly respiratory illness had infected Laguna Honda Hospital, one of the Bay Area’s most vulnerable communities. Two residents and nine staff members from the city’s 65-acre nursing home have tested positive.
The number of people in hospitals across California doubled over the weekend, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday. There are 1,432 in state hospital beds, with 597 requiring intensive care units. With 7,350 confirmed cases statewide, according to data compiled by this news organization, that amounts to just below a 20% hospitalization rate.
