If not for the coronavirus pandemic, Wednesday would have been the federal tax deadline.

Instead, that’s been extended to July 15 and stimulus payments are being deposited into bank accounts across the country as the economy is poised to suffer its worst year since the Great Depression.

Nationwide, the coronavirus has taken the lives of more than 24,000 Americans and infected a total of more than 600,000, according to Johns Hopkins University.

San Francisco is ramping up its efforts to acquire hotel rooms for healthcare workers, homeless residents and recently discharged patients. The city’s Board of Supervisors passed an emergency ordinance Tuesday in a rebuke of Mayor London Breed’s initial hotel plan, saying it was not expansive enough. – Evan Webeck, 7:56 a.m.

If you’re waiting on your stimulus payment, here’s how to check when it’ll come. Those who haven’t filed taxes the last two years can also now update their bank account information on a federal website so they can receive the payment. – CNN, 6:36 a.m.

San Jose City Council extended the city’s ban on residential evictions until May 31 at a Tuesday night meeting. The council is also pushing ahead on plans to freeze rent in the city — voting on that measure will take place as soon as April 21. – Maggie Angst, 6:01 a.m.
