Coronavirus Live Updates: COVID-19 in the Bay Area, Friday
May 22 1

California continues to hemorrhage jobs with  2.3 million workers losing their employment in April, pushing the state’s unemployment rate up to 15.5 percent.

Hardest hit was the leisure and hospitality sector that includes the hotel, restaurant, bar, and entertainment industries, which lost 866,200 jobs in California.

Meanwhile, the number of those infected with the virus and those dying from it continues to rise, with 2,000 newly discovered infections reported almost daily for the past week, and the death toll rising some days by 100.

Part of the rise in new cases might be attributed to an increase in testing throughout the state.
